Welcome to Vintage to Vogue, which sees the Vogue team take on a different trend or occasion each month and show you how to shop it second-hand.

As any seasoned second-hand shopper will tell you, there are some items of clothing that lend themselves to buying pre-loved, and some that don’t. Tailoring, for example, is always a winner because, not only are high-quality pieces available in abundance, but they also tend to age well. Stretch fabrics, meanwhile – think underwear and swimwear – are much harder to find in good condition, and are less likely to lend themselves to the “future heirloom” category.

This is, perhaps, why summer fashion can be particularly tricky to shop vintage, but thankfully, this season’s trend forecast is packed-full of pieces that are easy to find second-hand, and we are here to help hunt down those diamonds in the rough.

Not unlike tailoring, denim is a fabric that ages well and, as luck would have it, it is dominant in spring/summer 2023’s trend line-up. On the one hand you have the denim maxi skirts, which are available in abundance (and at very reasonable price points) at second-hand sites such as Etsy and Beyond Retro. Just watch out for those measurements, as fitted skirts can easily catch you out even when it’s your usual size. Then, of course, there’s the return of Noughties denim, which manifests in everything from patchwork to saddle bags and everything in-between: Farfetch pre-loved should be your first port of call for all thing Y2K.

For those who prefer a more minimalist spin, there’s plenty of pared-back pieces to whet your appetite. The “quiet luxury” trend isn’t going anywhere, and we’re happy to report that it translates easily into the summer months – just throw a tailored waistcoat (check out the men’s department for this) and tailored trousers for easy, Annie Hall appeal. There’s also the preppy trend, which is sure to inject your wardrobe with some Alexa Chung, It-girl appeal. We recommend searching for vintage tennis skirts, cricket knits and slip-on loafers.
